Rankin:
Rankin made his name in publishing by founding the seminal monthly magazine Dazed & Confused with Jefferson Hack in 1992. It provided a platform for innovation for emerging stylists, photographers and writers. The magazine went on to forge a distinctive mark in the arts and publishing spheres, and developed status and moulding trends, bringing some of the brightist lights to the foreground. Rankin has worked with some of the most celebrated publications, biggest brands and charities, including Nike, Dove, Pantene, Diageo, Women's Aid and Breakthrough Breast Cancer. He has also shot covers for Elle, German Vogue, Harper Bazaar, Esquire, GQ, Rolling Stone and Wonderland. His work questions social norms and ideas of beauty.
This photo is effective as it is different to stereotypical fashion and advertising photographs, this use of face paint is interesting and will draw the viewer in as they would expect to see a model perfectly made up with makeup and then the use of photoshop. Whereas Rankin contrasts this idea in this photograph and also makes a joke of the idea of beauty.
My Response:
For my response I painted the model, Naomi's face and then used paper to create a wind effect however this was ineffective therefore if I were to redo this shoot I would use a real fan to create the movement in the air more effectively. I used an aperture of …, shutter speed of … and an ISO of … this created a clear and light image. The use of the studio lighting allowed me to recreate the image by making the model stand out against the background and by created a shadow under the jaw line however I would use a higher view point when taking the photographs as this would create a more prominent shadow.
